Explore Nature’s Riches
The Kalgoorlie Arboretum is impressive as it is ambitious. Established in 1954, it’s a botanic garden dedicated to growing the region’s native flora.
Covering 26 hectares of land, it hosts a rich array of plant life. Inside you’ll find 60 species of eucalyptus trees, planted over the last 40 years, that provide enough shade for you to sit down and relax under. Known as a living museum for arid tree species, it’s a truly special place to explore
As well as eucalypts, you can walk among exotic trees, and make your way through the area’s native wildflowers. Discover interpretive walk trails, which take you through the trees, shrubs, grass, and the red dirt of Kalgoorlie, with information plaques telling you what you’re looking at, so you can identify the species of native plants. You’re able to learn about the trees of the Great Western Woodlands—the largest remaining area of Mediterranean climate woodland left on earth.
The Kalgoorlie Arboretum is home to large numbers of native birds, too, which live among the grass and trees, and the small dam that sits in the middle of the arboretum.
It’s the perfect place for a relaxing walk, or to bring the family and have a picnic under the shade of the gum trees. You can even bring your furry friends, with a dog exercise area just for them.
But bear in mind that there aren’t toilet facilities available, so be sure you go before you get there.
